Three distinct Native American villages once occupied the Knife River area, and today the land contained within Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site helps illuminate the lifestyles of the people who occupied this area from times well before European descendants explored the region until the mid-1800s. A reconstructed earthenlodge like those of the Hidatsa tribe has been built in the park, offering visitors the chance to see how these unique wood-and-earth structures were formed and how they were used by their inhabitants. The visitor center contains items that highlight various aspects of life for these tribes, including clothing, weaponry, tools and more. Located along the river just north of the town of Stanton, the site is a short drive to the south from Lake Sakakawea State Park.
